EAST GERMAN DATE CODES

Two dating systems were used: Numeric and Letter Code. The Numeric System was used in the early years of the DDR; the Letter Code System replaced it beginning in 1968.

Numeric System:
In the Numeric System, the year of manufacture is shown either by its last 2 numbers following a slash (example: /63= 1963), or by the full year (example: 1963).

Letter Code System:
From the beginning of 1968, letters were used in place of numbers to show the year of manufacture. The chart below shows the year each letter represents. Note that the letter "L" was used twice: 1973 and 1987.

NVA = Armed Forces
